Series Overview: The major function of the Ten Commandments are to reveal who God is, and who someone is can be best understood by knowing what matters most to them. Our obeying the big "ten words" from God (or not) is always a matter of response to who He is more than it is a matter of morality.
Session 1 - I Will Not Be Second
God wants us to know that He wants and insists on being the center of our lives, our highest priority, and the One we ultimately depend on to the exclusion of all others and all else.
Session 2 - I Refuse to Be Reduced
God refuses to be reduced to a physical object to
be worshipped or to be reduced to one “god” among lesser others.
Session 3 - I'm Not To Be Taken Lightly
God is telling us that He should never be taken
lightly and that His name must not be put to use for our use.
Session 4 - I Can Be Trusted and Enjoyed
When God commands that we cease working and focus on God regularly, God is telling us that Hecan be trusted so that we don’t always have to be working to make ends meet and get things done, and that He is worth contemplating and “soaking in” because He can be truly enjoyed for who He is.
Session 5 - I Care About Your Parents
God is telling us that He cares about our parents enough to insist we treat them well, whether they deserve it or not.
Session 6 - Everything Belongs to Me
In this command, God tells us that we don’t have to steal or take advantage of others financially because He can be trusted to take care of us. Stealing is a form of greed, and greed is counting on money to make us secure instead of God.
Session 7 - Marriage is Sacred to Me
The value God places on marriage is so great that He calls us to be as faithful to our own marriages and the marriages of others as He has been to us.
Session 8 - I Prize My Ultimate Creation
The value God places on human beings is so great that He refuses to allow us to treat people as less valuable than they truly are.
Session 9 - I Want You To Be What I Am
God wants us to be like Him: relational beings whose relationships with others are based on truth, honesty, and trustworthiness. He wants the truth about Himself to be the truth about us.
Session 10 - I Am Your Satisfaction
When God commands us not to covet anything anyone has that we don’t have, He is telling us
that what we truly need most is always Him, and that nothing else can truly satisfy us, no matter how good someone else’s things or life looks to us.
